पश्मीना

Pashmina is the world's finest natural fibre, derived from the undercoat of the Changthangi goat (Capra hircus) raised at altitudes above 14,000 feet in Ladakh and Kashmir. GI-tagged and internationally recognised, genuine Pashmina measures 12-16 microns in diameter — finer than the finest cashmere — and produces shawls of extraordinary warmth, lightness, and softness. Srinagar's master weavers transform raw Pashmina into shawls that take months of hand-spinning and hand-weaving to complete, and which become softer with each generation of wearing.

कशीदा

Kashida is Kashmir's richest embroidery tradition, worked on shawls, fabric, and furnishings using the aari (hook needle) technique. Distinct from the finer Sozni needlework, Kashida uses a hooked awl to pull loops of silk or wool thread through the fabric from the reverse, creating raised chain stitch designs on the surface. The motifs draw from the classic Kashmiri vocabulary — chinar leaves, lotus, cypress trees, and the iconic Shah Pasand (royal bouquet) — and cover large areas of shawl and fabric with dense colourful embroidery.

सोज़नी

Sozni is Kashmir's most refined needlework tradition, involving extraordinarily fine embroidery worked with a single needle on Pashmina shawls and fine wool fabric. Unlike Kashida which uses a hook, Sozni uses a thin needle to create hairline-fine stitches in silk thread on the shawl surface. The technique produces a flat, two-sided embroidery where the design appears identically on both faces — a mark of mastery that distinguishes it from all imitations. Sozni motifs include the classic Kashmiri buta (paisley), chinar leaves, and botanical studies of exceptional naturalism.

जामावार

Jamawar is a brocade shawl weaving tradition from Kashmir in which intricate tapestry-woven motifs — traditionally large paisleys and floral compositions — are created using fine silk or Pashmina weft threads on a Pashmina or twill ground. The word Jamawar derives from 'Jama' (robe) and 'war' (yard), indicating these shawls were historically measured by the robe-lengths they could furnish. True Jamawar takes months or years to weave using the kani technique (small wooden spools called kanis guide each colour weft thread). Jamawar shawls represent the apex of Kashmiri weaving.
