History & Origin
Georgette fabric was developed in the early 1900s from crepe de chine, with the highly twisted warp and weft yarns creating its characteristic matte finish and pebbled surface. While the fabric is named after a French designer, it entered India's textile mainstream in the 1960s–70s when Indian mills began producing high-quality synthetic georgette that offered the drape properties of silk at a fraction of the cost. Surat became the primary production hub for machine-made georgette in India, and remains so today.
The Indian georgette market has evolved significantly — from basic polyester georgette to sophisticated viscose-silk blends, digital-printed georgette, and embellished georgette (with sequins, zari, or thread embroidery). Today, georgette is the fabric of choice for a significant proportion of designer sarees, particularly those requiring heavy embroidery like chikankari and sequin work.
How to Identify Authentic / Quality Georgette
- Crush test — crumple a handful of georgette in your fist; quality georgette springs back with minimal wrinkles; poor quality polyester georgette holds creases or feels stiff
- Burn test — pure silk georgette burns to ash with a smell of burnt hair; polyester georgette melts and beads; viscose/rayon georgette burns to ash with a paper-like smell (do this only with edge trimmings)
- Feel the texture — genuine georgette has a consistent, slightly rough pebbled texture from the twisted yarns; very smooth 'georgette' is likely plain crepe or chiffon mislabelled
- Check the drape — hold a corner and let it fall; good georgette drapes in fluid, substantial folds; lightweight polyester georgette tends to be floppy rather than drapey

Care & Maintenance
- Hand wash polyester georgette in cold water with mild detergent — it's relatively hardy but twisting or wringing will permanently distort the texture
- Silk georgette should be dry cleaned or very gently hand washed with specialised silk detergent in cold water
- Do not wring — roll in a towel to remove excess water, then hang to dry in shade
- Iron on low heat using a pressing cloth — direct high-heat ironing on polyester georgette can melt the fibres; for silk georgette, steam iron on the reverse side only
Styling Tips
Georgette's fluid drape makes it ideal for sarees that need to look effortlessly elegant without the weight of heavier silks. For office wear, a plain or lightly printed georgette saree in navy, grey, or bottle green is professional and comfortable all day. For parties and weddings, embellished georgette sarees — particularly those with chikankari, sequins, or thread embroidery — are a top choice. Georgette kurtis with a slight pleating at the neckline or sleeves take advantage of the fabric's natural fall. Pair with heeled sandals or wedges to complement the flowing drape; flat footwear can make heavy georgette sarees drag.
OUR VERDICT
Georgette earns its place as India's most popular saree fabric because it genuinely delivers at every price point. Polyester georgette gives you an elegant drape at Rs 600; silk georgette gives you an heirloom at Rs 6,000. Know your fibre content, buy from transparent sellers, and georgette will always deliver value.
